New bicycle parking at NTU

A while back I posted about some of the obstacles that cyclists face in Taiwan. One thing I noted was the lack of good parking for bikes.
Witness the sidewalks around NTU which are overflowing with bicycles. An area like this is crying out for some similarly well designed bike racks.

Well, it seems my wish […]

Cycling the Tucheng loop

I headed out of Tucheng along Zhongyang Road toward Sanxia. Here one enters a kind of nowhere land. The crowded areas of Tucheng are left behind and Sanxia is still some distance ahead. There is nothing there apart from a few small factories and betel nut stands.
Just as the road passed under the freeway […]

Cycling in Taiwan video

I took this video while cycling to Manyue Yuan a few months ago. I just got around to uploading it to YouTube.

I also just discovered this new blog that has some great stories about bicycle touring in Taiwan.

Jioufen - A bike ride to Jioufen and the City of Sadness
Pingling and the East Coast

A road movie with a difference

According to the Taipei TimesThe Road in the Air (單車上路) is Taiwan's first road movie. However, it is conceived in a manner different from the typical road movie. On an island where it is possible to drive anywhere in a day, it has to be. Instead of driving a car the movie's stars ride […]

Use your head, wear a helmet

The Taipei Times today reports that 185 people die in bicycle accidents in Taiwan every year. It also says the main cause of death is, "head injuries resulting from not wearing helmets."
The article also says that "approximately 3,700 people are injured every year while riding a bicycle." The real number is probably much higher […]

Car Free Taipei

Today marks the beginning of a month of activities to promote sustainable transport in Taipei. The first event was a Car Free Day in Taipei. It began early this morning with a bike ride from Taipei City Hall to Zhonghe in Taipei County.
Cyclists of all ages, riding all kinds of bicycles participated in the […]

Obstacles to cycling in Taiwan

There is a good opinion piece in today's Taipei Times about promoting cycling in Taiwan. The article raises a number of good points.
The positive benefits of cycling are well known. I must admit I don't cycle as much as I should or would like to in Taiwan. Here are some of the reasons which apply […]

Cycling to Wulai

David on the road near Wulai
On Sunday morning I rode out to Wulai. I started out a bit late by my own standards, hitting the road at 6:30. Still on a Sunday morning there is not much traffic. It took me about an hour to reach the Xindian MRT Station, although that included a stop for breakfast. […]

Cycling to Manyue Yuan

Sign at the entrance to Manyue Yuan
This morning I cycled out to the entrance of the Manyue Yuan Forest Park (滿月圓森林遊樂區). The last time I rode out here was over three years ago. Not much has changed since last time, it's still a great ride and an easy way to get out into the mountains.
[…]

Urban spaces, hidden places

The geography of Taipei combines dense urban living with forest clad mountain slopes. I have previously blogged about some of my hikes around Tucheng. While none of the places I have hiked could be described as wilderness, they are a stark contrast to the pollution and chaos of the nearby city.
I lament […]
