I saw the recent days then I took the bus passed by that a lot of people demonstrated in front of the DPP. These people were from trade unions. They got contracts by the Chinese telecom for a construction project in Taiwan (created over 3000 jobs), but now nothing.
Besides all that his visit is just symbolic. He never spoke out for Taiwan's nor Tibet's independence. If you want him for cuddle , then I don't know...

Manuel, I think it is extremely unlikely Ma will meet the Dalai Lama. In fact it seems he is deliberately restricting the Dalai Lama's activities in Taiwan. The press conference was cancelled and the public speech in Taoyuan as well.

Of course Ma will meet the DL. Remember back then the presidential elections were in Taiwan, the Tibetan issue became hot (or less) in Taiwan.
After the shooting on Chen a lot of KMT supporters became concerned about that the DPP could win, because of the Tibetan issue.
Thanks to the West the KMT won at the end. People voted for change and better dies with China, which also means better ties with the Western business world.
