[...] David reported that a Green Party candidate, Calvin Wen (溫炳原), spent 26 hours in a camphor tree on the site of the Old Songshan Tobacco Factory (松山菸廠) in Taipei to protest and prevent its removal because of a new sports stadium. His photos reporting the Green Party protest are at flickr. Cancel this reply [...]

roentarre, camphor trees can live for hundreds of years. The tree is probably already more than 100 years old. Transplanting the tree is much more likely to shorten its lifespan than leaving it in situ.

Todd, please see the update to the post. The news is not good.

Brian, not sure about the Deaflympics plan.

Feiren, thanks!

Another place I pass every day. Actually, I'm sad they removed all the graffiti that covered the construction barriers.

You are very fortunate to have gotten in. When they were tearing down the old residences behind the factory I was allowed in to take some photos of the location, but only after they had kicked out all the "homeless" people living there.

I've tried to get in a couple times since but not been allowed.

Anyway, isn't this location part of the 2009 Deaf Olympics construction?

Sometimes, the trees do get removed for reasons that they are unlikely to survive more than 20 years of lifespan. Especially with London Plain trees.
