Tibetan Olympic torch in Taipei

Miss Tibet is interviewed by the media in Taipei, 24 Feb 2008

The Tibetan Olympic torch relay went through Taipei today with an event at Freedom Square (自由廣場). The crowd chanted "Free Tibet" and "Boycott Beijing Olympics". Miss Tibet 2006 Tsering Chungtak attended the event which attracted a lot of media attention. The event was organised by Taiwan Friends of Tibet. It was wonderful to see the magnificent flag of Tibet flying at Taiwan Democracy Memorial Hall.

Tsering Chungtak attracted made a brief statement. She said she had a wonderful time in Taiwan and thought it was a very beautiful country and the people were very friendly. The Taipei Times reported that when Tsering Chungtak participated in the Miss Tourism Queen contest in Malaysia last year she withdrew in protest rather than wear a sash reading "Miss Tibet-China". It is a pity more Taiwanese don't show similar principles when forced to use the name "Chinese Taipei" at international events.

The Tibetan Olympics will be held from 15 to 25 May, in Dharamsala, India, where the Tibetan Government-in-exile is based. The Tibetan Olympic torch will visit ten cities on five continents before returning to Dharamsala for the Tibetan Olympics.

Great write-up and photos as usual. I didn’t know anything about this, so it’s kind of odd that my last two blog posts have been Tibet-related. It’s a pity I missed out on seeing this event.

Craig, I just found out about it via an article in the Taipei Times the day before. There will also be a march fora Free Tibet in Taipei on 9 March. Starting time is 1:30pm at the Guangfu Road gate of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.

Thanks David. I should start reading the Taiwan newspapers again. March 9 I don’t think I’ll make as I’m planning to go down to Gāoxióng for the start of the Tour de Taiwan.

[translation by David:
Westerners boycott the Beijing Olympics because of China's terrible human
rights record and the Communist dictatorship.
Taiwanese think China is poor and backward, their thinking is stubborn,
they cannot accept different opinions.

shit! Do Taiwanese and Westerners understand China?]
