Cable cars opening 4 July

After some delays it seems the Maokong cable cars (貓空纜車) are finally set to start operating next week. I first wrote about the cable cars back in April.  The Taipei Times reports

After a 12-week test run and two inspections by transportation experts, Taipei's Maokong cable car system in Muzha (木柵) will begin operation on July 4, the Taipei City Government announced yesterday.

Expect to see plenty of signs and advertisements for the cable cars in the MRT as the MRT are also responsible for operating the cable car system. Interestingly they use the word "Gondola" instead of cable cars. In Mandarin the cable cars are called kōngzhōng lǎnchē (空中纜車), usually shortened to lǎnchē (纜車).

This morning I rode my bike out to Muzha and took a few photos of the station at the Taipei Zoo.

Once the cable cars are running I will go and take a ride. I will post a report and more photos here.

I heard that the gondolas are non-airconditioned and very poorly ventalated. I suggest waiting till the weather cools down a little to take a ride.

Daudi:

Can you pick up the Daily links today or tomorrow? I think we should begin rotating them.

Cool. I was wondering when those things would start service. Some people told me they were already running while others swore they weren’t finished. Anyways, I think gondola is a pretty decent translation. Considering the way they look, hanging in classic gondola-style. Besides, don’t cable cars conjure up images of rice-a-roni and San Francisco for you? Or is that just me…

I just wanted to drop a line to say that English announcements should be available soon on the Gondola as I have just finished recording them about 10 days ago!! As soon as Air conditioning has been installed, I will make my way up for a visit.
